Jarmean? ‘bad penny’ (self released). Certainly one of the most memorable and innovative releases we had the pleasure of hearing last year was the debut outing by London screwballs jarmean? ‘mind the gap’ proved to be a furiously addictive fringe flicking feast of punk jazz music hall hullabaloo that simply had us cooing in fond admiration while simultaneously being electro shocked into reaching for the hi-fi remote to frantically push the repeat button on the player. Several months down the line and with the band having been holed up putting the finishing touches to their debut full length - tentatively titled ‘the bad penny opera’ (which should be gracing both record counters and home loving players any day soon) the London town rapscallions take up tankards offer good cheer and parade their vintage Victoriana verve by way of the pre-teaser cut ‘bad penny. sitting somewhere between the Cesarians and Paul Hawkins and thee awkward silences (an new album from whom - or more precisely their label Jezus Factory - I’m sure we have about our person - hang on will check and get back to you on that one) jarmean? exist or so it seems in a parallel space rooted into the subterranean terrains of a smog bound olde London town festooned with narrowed cobbled archways whose shadows whisper of death and decay and where in the illuminated glow of creaking taverns the night’s dark and fearful dread is left at the door to be replaced by a moments merriment and jollity, ’bad penny’ is a glorious strike a match light the fuse and scamper for cover fusion of frenetic toe tapping groove that embraces to its considerable far reaching canvas a mercurial blending and bending of rousing rag time and skat jazz motifs trip wired by a contagious cortege of music hall fanfare set to skewed time signatures awash with twists and hooks aplenty that’s all at once unstoppable, unforgettable and above all incurably infectious. Just buy the blighter and see if I’m wrong - go on dare you.

'Ello ello ello!

We're please to say we recieved our first national airplay last Wednesday on the Steve Lamacq show, which was v.cool becuase we love Mr Lamacq! In fact very randomly a new track of ours was played "Bad Penny" - which will be our next release in 2010!

Watch out for it as we're gonna be making a mental video for too!

So we've been having some great feedback from "Mind The Gap" which will be released in January... some great reviews have been coming through - we are being described as "Russell Brand set to music..." and "Blur meets Jack The Ripper" -- have a little read through these....

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT JARMEAN? + THEIR HOMETOWN OF BABYLON-DON

Jarmean? emerged into the whitechapel underground in early 2008. They found themselves discombobulated by cultural and political shifts around the world, no longer recognising the planet on which they live as home... Then it all became clear, they had emerged into a different world, an alternate reality; a place of horror, and place of fun, known to Jarmean? as Babylon-don...

Jarmean? make music and tell stories about this Brave New World. They are on a mission, they are mockneys - mocking anyone who affects the cockney mind-trap, in the hope that they will help cure some residents of Babylon-don of their stockholm syndrome.

Their first mass-produced communication to this effect is called - 'Mind The Gap' - a phrase whose meaning they aim to subvert. Babylon-don is full to bursting with false promises; promises of riches, fame, beauty, health and happiness which cynically distort people's dreams. 'Mind the Gap' say Jarmean? between what you hope for, and what you get. They illustrate the point by including in the song a cautionary tale of two star-crossed lovers. The two other songs on the recording emphasize how false hope can warp people's lives; 'Prophets of Doom' tells of a lady who reads that vile shit-rag 'The Daily Mail' too much, and she becomes obsessed with apocalypse. 'Baby Doll' relates the story of a man who was so in love with consumerism that he married a sex-doll, with tragic consequences.

Taken together the three songs of 'Mind The Gap' are Jarmean?'s first attempt at reaching out to the slaves of Babylon-don, describing to them the limits of their mental prisons, whilst also trying to make them dance.

Live Jarmean? are committed to entertaining as well as preparing Babylon-don for revolution, performing high-energy, thoughtful songs that don't preach. They are the punk band that parties like its 1909, traveling through time and space to bring to Babylon-don what it so badly needs: something different.
